Diversité phylogénétique et fonctionnelle des communautés microbiennes incultivées des sédiments marins de la marge de Sonora, Bassin de Guaymas (Golfe de Californie) ArchiMer
Vigneron, Adrien.
At continental margins, and more particularly in cold seep areas, microbial and animal communities were locally detected at the surface of the sediments. These communities grow using reduced chemical compounds (H2S, Methane, COZ ...) contained in the percolated cold fluids and produced by both geological and microbial processes. ln order to study microbial community diversity in these ecosystems and their role in the environment as well as to understand the environmental factors influencing the distribution and ecophysiology of these communities, surface (0-20 cmbsf) but also deeper (<9 mbsf) sediments were collected at the Sonora Margin. Microbial communities have been studied using various molecular, cultural and microscopy approaches. This research...

Diversity of 16S rRNA genes from bacteria of sugarcane rhizosphere soil BJMBR
Pisa,G.; Magnani,G.S.; Weber,H.; Souza,E.M.; Faoro,H.; Monteiro,R.A.; Daros,E.; Baura,V.; Bespalhok,J.P.; Pedrosa,F.O.; Cruz,L.M..
Sugarcane is an important agricultural product of Brazil, with a total production of more than 500 million tons. Knowledge of the bacterial community associated with agricultural crops and the soil status is a decisive step towards understanding how microorganisms influence crop productivity. However, most studies aim to isolate endophytic or rhizosphere bacteria associated with the plant by culture-dependent approaches. Culture-independent approaches allow a more comprehensive view of entire bacterial communities in the environment. In the present study, we have used this approach to assess the bacterial community in the rhizosphere soil of sugarcane at different times and under different nitrogen fertilization conditions. At the high taxonomic level, few...

Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp mussel from a methane seep on the gabon continental margin (southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Nadalig, Thierry; Caprais, Jean-claude; Sibuet, Myriam; Fiala Medioni, Aline; Amann, Rudolf; Dubilier, Nicole.
Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy, comparative 16S rRNA analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that this Bathymodiolus sp. lives in a dual symbiosis with sulfide- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. A distinct distribution pattern of the symbiotic bacteria in the gill epithelium was observed, with the thiotrophic symbiont dominating the apical region and the methanotrophic symbiont...

Dynamique des populations bactériennes au cours de deux productions expérimentales de phytoplancton marin naturel ArchiMer
Bianchi, M.a.; Martin, Y.p..
Quantitative and qualitative variations of the heterotrophic bacterial population, during two experimental induced phytoplanktonic blooms are described. When the phytoplanktonic population deceases, the bacterial population exhibits a significant increase. The spring microflore is quite different from the fall ones. Microbiological, physiological and biochemical fluctuations indicate qualitative fluctuations. Bacterial strains are identified as "bacterial profiles".

Dynamique du phosphore et rôle comme facteur limitant de la production planctonique dans le panache de la Gironde sur le plateau continental Sud Gascogne ArchiMer
Labry, Claire.
This study was supported by the Atlantic working site of the « Programme National d’Océanographie Côtière » (PNOC, PNEC since 1999). The objectives were (1) to check the existence and to understand the mechanisms of winter phytoplankton blooms in the bay of Biscay influenced by the Gironde waters (2) to determine the limiting nutrient of the primary production associated to these blooms and to follow the seasonal evolution of the limiting nutrient, (3) to understand the consequences of this early limitation on the structuration of algal populations in spring. Since phosphorus was supposed to be the major limiting nutrient of algal growth in the Gironde plume, the different forms of the phosphorus cycle as well as the bacterial compartment, central in this...

Ecologie des vibrions pathogenes ArchiMer
Dodin, A; Dosso, M; Guillou, M.
There exists no biochemical test allowing to define the pathogenicity of a bacterium, still less for a Vibrionaceae. Two essential characters are to be retained to hold responsible an isolated germ, for an illness: 1) the binding factor, the identification is difficult but a double diffusion of agar should simplify the method; 2) the search for the choleric toxin or a common part of the choleric toxin (toxin LT or ST of E. coli ). Here again, simplified techniques may be used. The acquirement of a plasmid responsible for the binding factor or for the toxin production of the non-pathogenic Vibrionaceae in the origin of certain epidemic diseases in France and in the world. Frequently, epidemics due to common germs (Aeromonas hydrophila of Africa) lead to...

Ecophysiological studies on luminous bacteria associated with marine gastropods. ArchiMer
Ramesh, A; Venugopalan, V.
Information available on the association of luminous bacteria with marine invertebrates is limited. Hence qualitative and quantitative investigations were undertaken with a view to understand the distribution of luminous microflora in relation to the environmental factors and also in the gut of two marine gastropods, Aplysia benedicti Eliot and Bullia tranquebarica (Roding) from Porto Novo (11 degree 29'N, 79 degree 46'E) waters of the East coast of India. The gut of the gastropods harboured maximum number of luminous bacteria when compared to the water and sediment. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of two luminous bacterial components, viz. Vibrio harveyi and V. fishceri. V. fischeri was not found in association with A. benedicti . The isolates...

Ecosystemes benthiques profonds et chimiosynthese bacterienne: Sources hydrothermales et suintements ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien.
Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. Two groups of primary producers can be recognized: a highly efficient cool water group with large vestimentiferan tube worms and bivalves, and alvinellid polychaetes adapted to hot waters. Both groups are exploited by specific...

Efecto de las condiciones de transporte, recepción, aclimatación y siembra de Nauplios de Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) sobre la sobrevivencia en larvicultura OceanDocs
Suárez, J.A.; García, A.; Newmark, F.; Bador, R..
In order to identify initial factors that can affect shrimp postlarvae survival during larval rearing, three larval rearing facilities from the Caribbean coast of Colombia were samplesd for 71 nauplii batches during 10 months of 1996. For each batch, cualitative variables (origin, transportation mode, presence of bacteria in transport water) and quantitative variables (transportation time and density, physicochemical parameters of the water, proportion of each nauplii stage and of deformed nauplii) were monitored. Water quality and density (nauplii/l) variables were monitored during the whole process of nauplii packing, transport, reception, acclimatization and stocking. To evaluate the relationship between qualitative variables and larval rearing...

Effect of buctril super (Bromoxynil) herbicide on soil microbial biomass and bacterial population BABT
Abbas,Zafar; Akmal,Muhammad; Khan,Khalid Saifullah; Fayyaz-ul-Hassan,.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of bromoxynil herbicide on soil microorganisms, with the hypothesis that this herbicide caused suppression in microbial activity and biomass by exerting toxic effect on them. Nine sites of Punjab province (Pakistan) those had been exposed to bromoxynil herbicide for about last ten years designated as soil 'A' were surveyed in 2011 and samples were collected and analyzed for Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Biomass Nitrogen (MBN), Biomass Phosphorus (MBP) and bacterial population. Simultaneously, soil samples from the same areas those were not exposed to herbicide designated as soil 'B' were taken. At all the sites MBC, MBN and MBP ranged from 131 to 457, 1.22 to 13.1 and 0.59 to 3.70 µg g-1 in the contaminated...

Effect of ionizing radiation onVibrio bacteria in Crassostrea virginica (American oyster) ArchiMer
Eberiel, D; Dooley, K; Langton, L; Malleth, J.
The presence of Vibrio bacteria in raw shellfish poses a significant health hazard to the consuming public. These human pathogens are natural, seasonal components of the microbial flora of shellfish which can result in primary septicemic or diarrheal fatal infections. Existing shellfish depuration neither targets nor eliminates the Vibrio bacteria. For this reason, additional purification processes are necessary. In this study, the effect of low dose gamma radiation on the inactivation ofVibrio cholerae (01 and non 01) and vulnificus is investigated. Log decrement (D10) values ranging only to a high of 0.09 KGy in the Vibrio strains support the hypothesis that food irradiation technology can provide an additional effective and efficient shellfish...

Effect of P depletion on the functional pools of diatom carbohydrates, and their utilization by bacterial communities ArchiMer
Labry, Claire; Delmas, Daniel; Moriceau, Brivaela; Gallinari, Morgane; Quere, Julien; Youenou, Agnes.
Phosphorus (P) limitation of phytoplankton growth is known to affect the accumulation and release of carbohydrates (CHO) by micro-algae. However, relatively little is known about the fate of algal exudates, notably their bacterial degradation. The CHO chemical characterization is also not exhaustive, especially in ‘functional’ pools relevant for phytoplankton physiology (particulate reserve [R] or structural [S] CHO) and for bacterial degradation (dissolved mono- [MDCHO] and polysaccharides [P-DCHO]). In this study, we investigated how P depletion and repletion affect the CHO composition in diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii cultures, and the shortterm response of free and diatom-attached bacteria in terms of abundance and potential βglucosidase activity...

ABSTRACT The effect of plant growth-promoting bacteria inoculation on plant growth and the sugar content in Agave americana was assessed. The bacterial strains ACO-34A, ACO-40, and ACO-140, isolated from the A. americana rhizosphere, were selected for this study to evaluate their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. The three bacterial strains were evaluated via plant inoculation assays, and Azospirillum brasilense Cd served as a control strain. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that strains ACO-34A, ACO-40 and ACO-140 were Rhizobium daejeonense, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Pseudomonas mosselii, respectively. All of the strains were able to synthesize indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), solubilize phosphate, and had nitrogenase...

Effect of xanthan on the growth of sulphate-reduction bacteria in marine sediments. ArchiMer
Battersby, N; Stewart, D; Sharma, A.
Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The products formed as a result of the biodegradation of the polymer by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in these sediments appear to have acted as suitable...
